The five pillars of Islam are the five basic duties that all Muslims should carry out as the way of showing their obedience to Allah. Five times a day, Muslims, either on their own or together, pause from their everyday lives to spend sometime remembering Allah. Prayer is always said facing the holy city of Mecca, the most holy city in Islam, and are united to the Ka'ahah by an invisible line of direction called the qible. Mosques are built or altered so that it is easy for believers to find the correct direction but to help those praying elsewhere, special compasses are often used and it is not unusual to find a prayer mat with an inset compass.
